Fertile Ground Design was founded in 2009 by Chris King, with the idea that designing a garden and building one shouldn't sit in two different companies. We do both, in-house, with a small permanent team.
Twenty years later, we've completed projects across St Albans, Harpenden, Radlett, Wheathampstead, London Colney, Bricket Wood, Park Street and into North London — from formal courtyard restorations to full back-garden rebuilds with terraces, decking, planting and water features.
What hasn't changed: every project starts with one of us walking your garden with you, listening to how you actually live, and producing a design and a quote that's properly costed before any work starts.
1. Site visit (free). We come to you, walk the plot, talk through how you live, and what you'd like the garden to do. No obligation, no pressure.
2. Concept & quote. You get a proper design proposal — drawings, planting schedule, materials list — and a fixed quote. Before any work starts, you know exactly what you're getting.
3. Build. Our own team builds it. Project-managed by us, finished by us, signed off by us. You're not handed off to a sub-contractor halfway through.
4. Aftercare. We don't disappear. Planting needs a year to settle; we come back to check in, adjust, and answer questions for as long as you need.
